Industrial wood is the main material used in modern interiors. Understanding industrial wood is the most fundamental knowledge of anyone working in the interior design industry.
I. The most commonly used industrial woods today include:
- 1: Plywood
- 2: MDF wood
- 3: HDF wood
- 4: OKAL wood
- 5: MFC Melamine wood
- 6: Veneer wood
- 7: Plastic wood
- 8: Laminated veneer lumber
- 9: Honeycomb board
Industrial wood is produced domestically and imported. Imported goods are mainly from China and Malaysia. Products from Malaysia are highly appreciated for their quality. Most have an international standard size which is 1200mm Width x 2440mm Length. The thickness depends on the type of products.
II. Specification
1. Plywood
- Structure: The ~1mm thin wood layers are laminated and stacked at right angles with specialized glue
- Feature: No cracking, no shrinkage, less termite, high bearing capacity. There are plain plywood, film-coated water-resistant plywood, glue-coated. The surface is usually not smooth and flat
- Common thickness: 3mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 20mm, 25mm
- Application: Manufactured as raw material for residence and office furniture and as core for veneer surfaces. The water-resistant type as used for copha, outdoor reinforcement, etc.
2. OKAL wood
- Structure: Natural wood ground into chips, mixed with specialized glue and pressed according to specifications.
- Feature: No shrinkage, less termites, moderate force. The surface has a relatively high smoothness. The original type has edges that are easily chipped, relatively poor moisture resistance. The moisture-resistant type usually has a green core.
- Common thickness: 9mm, 12mm, 18mm, 25mm
- Application: Manufactured as raw material for residence and office furniture, advertisement, as the reinforcement for the MFC, PVC coating, etc., and as a good finishing layer for many types of materials including paints.
3. MDF wood: Medium density fiberboard
- Structure: Finely ground natural wood mixed with specialized glue and reinforced with very high pressure.
- Feature: No cracking, no shrinkage, little termite, relatively soft, low force, easy to work. High smoothness surface. The moisture-resistant type usually has a slightly greenish core
- Common thickness: 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm,15mm, 17mm, 18mm, 20mm, 25mm
- Application: Manufactured as raw material for residence and office furniture, advertisement, as the reinforcement for the MFC, PVC coating, etc., and as a good finishing layer for many types of materials including paints.
4. HDF wood: High density fiberboard
- Structure: Finely ground natural wood mixed with specialized glue and reinforced with very high pressure.
- Feature: No cracking, no shrinkage, hard, water-resistant, and heat-resistant.
- Common thickness: 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm,15mm, 17mm, 18mm, 20mm, 25mm
- Application: Manufactured as raw materials for luxury furniture, reinforcement of industrial wood flooring, etc.
5. MFC Melamine wood
- Structure: The Melamine layer is heat-resistant, hard, with rich color and texture, pressed onto the surface of particle board or MDF texture
- Feature: The surface is scratch resistant and heat resistant. There are 1-sided and 2-sided Melamine coatings
- Common thickness: 18mm, 25mm. The density depends on the order, one-sided MCF can also be created. MFC also has a different standard dimension: 1830mm Width x 2440mm Length x 18mm/25mm Thickness
- Application: Manufactured as furniture, especially for office. The downside is limited product design, edge processing and pairing. The edge is mostly finished with a plastic brace using a specialized edge gluing machine.
6. Veneer wood
- Structure: It is natural wood peeled into a thin layer from 0.3 - 1mm with width from 130-600mm and is usually pressed onto the surface of plywood, 3mm-thick MDF
- Feature: The nature of the structural surface is flesh wood, which is suitable for all surface finishing technologies. The hardness is highly dependent on the PU surface treatment.
- Common thickness: 3mm pre-pressed boards or can be ordered
- Application: It is a very beautiful finishing material for many interior products. There are varieties of natural wood with competitive prices and diverse shaping
7. Plastic wood
- Structure: This is a material made up of PVC plastic powder with some inorganic or cellulose based fillers
- Feature: Good moisture resistance, light weight, and easy to manufacture
- Common thickness: 5mm, 9mm, 12mm, 18mm
- Application: Manufactured as furniture for residence, office, advertisement, and as Acrylic coating
8. Laminated veneer lumber
- Structure: Small wooden slats (usually rubber, pine, oval, acacia, cinnamon, and Trau wood) are used together to form panels
- Feature: Close to the features of natural woods
- Common thickness: 12mm, 18mm
- Application: Produce furniture for residence and office.
9. Honeycomb board
- Structure: Using technology to create light weight products with thickness from 38mm-50mm
- Feature: Light, decent bearing due to honeycomb structure
- Common thickness: 38mm, 50mm
- Application: Manufactured as furniture, door frame, soundproof partitions, etc.
